An old post on pre-code thesps co-written with Daniel Riccuito moves to the front page of The Chiseler.

New in the post, my copies of THE SHOOTIST and MURPHY’S WAR have arrived — each has a video essay by me. Delighted to be sharing disc space, on THE SHOOTIST, with my old chum Scout Tafoya. It pains me to say it, but his essay on John Wayne is better than mine.

My contributor copies of THE CAT AND THE CANARY and THE SCARFACE MOB should be arriving soon also. Fiona and I each contributed a piece to TCATC, with lots of help from some of you, dear readers, as well as my first-year students, on the vocal front.

As far as the Awful British Comedians go, I have lots more to post. The field gets richer and only slightly more depressing the longer I gaze into it. But I can’t let it dominate the blog eternally, so I’ll dial it back to a weekly post until I’ve exhausted my interest or your patience, whichever wears out first. There are the female ABCs to address, and continuing delights and frustrations and fantasies to be spun off from the works of Askey, Hay, Trinder, Formby and the Crazy Gang, among others.

Also arriving by post was my purchase from the recent Indicator sale, three for £15 and one for a tenner, impossible to resist given the amazing extra features. And of course I haven’t played any of them yet — well, those Arthur Askey movies won’t watch themselves!

The question now arises — in the next sale, do I need to get MOROCCO and BLONDE VENUS, which I don’t like as much as THE DEVIL IS A WOMAN, SCARLET EMPRESS, DISHONORED, and SHANGHAI EXPRESS, which I now have? “Completism” and “possessiveness” are both vices… still, it’s been ages since I watched MOROCCO, and that was on VHS…
