PHILO VANCE: The detective series that proved Basil Rathbone would never catch on playing a sleuth.
They also “proved” that William Powell would never make an interesting movie sleuth!
Those early talkies are really tough to sit through, and Philo is such a dry character he makes things immeasurably worse.
