Silent Pictures

Yesterday I was able to bring you screenshots from Pordenone. Today — well, it’s almost like they saw me doing it, because when I hit ctrl and prt sc, all I get is the above: the closed caption subtitles come through clear as a bell, but the image is a perfect and absolute blank. Silent movies just got silenter.

The subtitle is a tragic one, for GUOFENG (1935) is the last movie of Ruan Lingyu, who killed herself before it came out. Of course this is one of very few Chinese silent films currently extant. Hope to write more on it later, but first — teaching. And I have multiple students in self-isolation or quarantined with the coronavirus. Everyone be careful out there! People are fragile things.
