  1. Simon Fraser Says:

Thanks for that. We really enjoyed Us too, for much the same reasons that you two did. It was a fun ride and the scares were well earned. I want to watch it again with the knowledge of who Red really is , that adds an extra layer to what Lupita was doing that I want to see. Has anyone ever won an Oscar for a performance in a horror movie? I’d be a bit upset if she doesn’t get a nomination for this.

  2. Fiona Watson Says:

Frederick March won for Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde in the early 30’s. Didn’t happen again till Hopkins ‘ Silence Of The Lambs win. Sigourney Weaver was nominated for Aliens. Totally agree that Lupita’s perf is a potential award winner, which would make her the first woman to win for a horror movie.

  3. Lupita wouldn’t be the first because Jodie Foster also won for SotL.

  4. Kathy Bates won for Misery too.

  5. Yes, she Jesusing-well did!

  6. Fiona Watson Says:

I’d say Lupita’s performance is in the same playing field as March’s or Hopkins’. Misery is more like a psychological thriller with horror elements, and Jodie Foster’s perf is great but pretty ‘straight’ without the baroque stylings of the guys who won.

  7. Ruth Gordon won Best Supporting Actress for Rosemary’s Baby.

  8. Ahhh… which doesn’t fit into any conventional idea of a “horror performance”…

  9. It’s still a horror movie, though, and I find Minnie Castevet a lot scarier than more conventional horror villains.

  10. Yes, much of which is to do with how she’s shot. RG more or less plays it the way she played all her later roles, but the context and presentation are everything.
