The hyperbole, however deserved, still feels a bit unseemly for our polite and thoughtful boys. Have to ask — Where do the Far Stretches of the Amazon figure in Laurel and Hardy?

Recalling a very old Punch cartoon: A theater marquee promises “A LAUGH RIOT FOR YOUNG AND OLD!” Coming out the doors are a small boy and and old man, laughing hysterically. Between them is a middle-aged man in a bowler, deadpan.

  3. All the old comedy trailersss that promise you’ll “howl” feel a bit indelicate to me. And of course the trailers are all for features while the boys’ best work was in shorts. I confess I have no urge to see the post-Roach productions.

Thanks for the thoughtful analysis ( and the namecheck ). You are quite right in saying that these movies deserve to be seen in a theater, with an audience. They really benefited from the madness of crowds.

  5. They get ’em hysterical! And being enveloped in the lunacy is a bit dreamlike, so you sort of *can’t* think “Oh no, don’t do that.” You become as engrossed as the boys.
