Bonzo

As a big fan of the Bonzo Dog Band (saw them live!), it’s strange that I didn’t know their cinematic progenitor, Bonzo the Dog. Thanks to Il Cinema Ritrovato (and a helpful hint from Mark Fuller), the rascal pup and I are now well acquainted, and so can you be too! Bonzo is the subject of a mini-Forgotten here.

In “The Mouse and His Child”, the label of Bonzo Dog Food is an object of dramatic and philosophical obsession. Around 38 minutes the title characters encounter a troupe of birds performing an art play titled “The Last Visible Dog”. Around 52 minutes they’re at the bottom of a pond, where a turtle pontificates on contemplating the Bonzo Dog Food label to grasp infinity.

  2. Yes, Donald, Bonzo gave his name to the popular dog food.
