“That’s PRESIDENT Fuckface Von Clownstick to you!”

Rudolph Klein-Rogge in Fritz Lang’s SPIONE. Lang is the filmmaker we really need to document these times, I feel.

  1. Considering that Trump is a product of mass media, entertainment, and consumerism, and visibly so (I mean he’s every postmodern theory and prophecy embodied and come terrifyingly true), Lang’s works are more relevant. His was a vision of surveillance, information, and manipulation that he saw at the center of modernity. Breitbart Media and Fake News is the embodiment of what he was afraid of because he saw first hand how that helped put Hitler in power.

Where Trump fits in all this is the question…because he’s not Mabuse, he’s a little like Haghi. The most Trumpian figure in Lang’s films, is Frohlich, the rich playboy hero of METROPOLIS who becomes the mediator between Hand and Heart, and more or less exists to pacify the rabble and make them reconcile with their landlords. Much like Trump who follows the prosperity gospel, Frohlich is a bumbling fool with serious Freudian baggage and feelings of inadequacy.

When Trump won, I made a joke on Facebook about how ”Citizen Kane” had become dated because the tragedy of Kane was that the American people wouldn’t elect a populist anti-establishment business mogul that it was something money couldn’t buy…that was an assumption that worked at the time but it’s obviously invalid now because Kane lost and Trump won. Even ”A Face in the Crowd” is dated because it worked on the assumption that leaking nasty information about the media demagogue would damage his career when that is no longer true either. Scorsese’s ”King of Comedy” and ”Wolf of Wall Street” are the only relevant and successful satires in terms of mass media and consumer culture because they show that the public and society would tolerate, condone, and forgive all manner of crimes if the people doing it sell a story that they can accept.

  2. Damn, you have to turn this into a full essay! A brilliant analysis of Citizen Trump.

  3. I’ll take that as a commission then!

  4. By all means! I would publish that in a heartbeat!
