Forgotten Fortnight


The Forgotten is going fortnightly / bi-weekly — this will give me more time for other projects, and tie in with a less frequent rate of posting in general over at the Notebook. A new feature will run here alternate Thursdays, as soon as I work out what it is.

So it’s fitting to bow out from the weekly run with a last film, in this case by one of those maudit cinema du papa cineastes I love so much…

    This was shot at a time when lots of French and Italian companies were filming in Romania on the cheap. Ceausescu had opened the country up to Western film makers, and would not shut it down again until some time in the late 70s.

    Alas, I’ve only seen one of the co-productions dating from that period – Michael Anderson’s POPE JOAN, which is hardly an inducement to see the rest. Don’t think I’m overpraising Rene Clair when I say his film looks far more inviting!

    Interestingly, it’s a tradition that has revived since the fall of Communism. My own years in Bucharest saw the making of AN UNFORGETTABLE SUMMER with Kristin Scott-Thomas and ASPHALT TANGO with Charlotte Rampling.

    The big one, of course, was Anthony Minghella’s COLD MOUNTAIN, which was fascinating in that the history of the South during the Civil War was essentially that of Romania during World War II. That was the first time in decades that making a movie in Romania did NOT mean your career was in trouble!

  2. Hollywood has been roving around the globe looking for the cheapest locations since forever, or since the passing of the sound stage aesthetic. Britain has occasionally made it onto the list.

    I suspect Clair was offered the Romanian army as extras, or else how could he afford all those troops? Tito did the same in Yugoslavia for Woody Allen.
