My Pierre Etaix piece, an epic career overview, is now up at The Criterion Collection website.

The other essays completed for Criterion are also there — STAGECOACH and THE 39 STEPS. But the Etaix is, I think, not only the biggest but the best of the three.

  1. Excellent!

I recall what a big deal Happy Anniversary as on the Rugoff art theater chain in New York. It was the only short they used to advertise with whatever features were playing.

Jerry says The Day the Clown Cried was a mistake that was entirely his own fault and will never be released.

  2. I wonder if he has the heart to destroy it? Because otherwise, I would imagine it would see the light of day eventually, after Jer is no longer with us.

  3. Good question.

I’m sure it’s better than Life is Beautiful

  4. I would think so. More interesting. The Benigni is OK until it gets into difficult territory, at which point it stops working. Lewis’s films stop working IMMEDIATELY, and then start to work in strange, unfamiliar ways.
