The Amazing Mr Kirsanoff
Short #1. I didn’t upload these.
Short #2. But I’m going to upload more. This one dates from 1950 — can we take this as evidence that Kirsanoff’s decline is a myth? Maybe some of the features he was forced to make in these later years are inferior, but his talent and imagination were intact. Even though at first this feels almost like a remake of BRUMES D’AUTOMNE.
Short #3. If you enjoyed MENILMONTANT, you’ll dig these. Minimum plot, maximum zazoozazoozazoozay.
Short #4.TOO MUCH beauty? Ration it! This one effectively IS a remake, since Jean Epstein also filmed LES BERCEAUX.
OK — you may compare and contrast —

Wow, you seem quite taken with this Kirsanoff person!
I must make an effort to watch some of his stuff. You’ve convinced me…with a little help from the almighty Pauline.

My next screening of that one is scheduled for summer… want to start around six or seven so it gets dark as the film unfolds… this is based on the advice of the sage Comrade K, who reckons it’ll give the spell the best chance of working. And with Rivette, the word “spell” can be taken… quite literally.

Off-topic (yet again). It’s Fellini’s Birthday. Here’s the Italian trailer for 8 1/2 Most interesting.

AT LAST! We get to see Guido being an effective, commanding director, apparently actually making something — even if it is just the trailer.

What’s fascinating about this trailer is that it’s apparently constructed out of an earlier take of the scene. In the finished film the action is a lot more organized and all the costumes are white.

Here’s the finale in the released version:

They say they always made sure to print two good takes of everything in Italy, in the sure and certain knowledge that the lab would manage to destroy one, but this certainly looks like a whole different shoot — maybe he decided he could improve it, or maybe the trailer version was always intended for the trailer? Such extravagance doesn’t seem out of the question — this IS Fellini.
