Brogues Gallery

Fiona identifies closely with this one.
Which of these would you go and see at your local Malodeon?

I’m actually pretty disappointed there isn’t a movie called THE SMACKHEAD. I looked!

“Pied-à-terre” would make a good title for a noir.

NIGHT was shown often in the presidential palace, it being Imelda Marcos’ favorite film.

That’s some number! Busby Berkeley always finds a way to take thing beyond just plain wrong, and into fancy.
The French could use Pied a Terre, but I fear Hollywood would find that too sophisticated. Like they had to anglicize Les Liaisons Dangereuses because it sounded too artsy.
I guess Marcos found out the hard way that you can’t cheat destiny.

The slave market musical number is extraordinary too, with a slave falling to her death. Did any choreographer/director kill as many people during songs as Berkeley? Lullaby of Broadway ends in a defenestration, and there’s a woman murdered in 42nd Street too, I think.
And then there’s the fatality he caused drunk driving offscreen…

All of this is copiously noted in the special issue of Motion: Companion to Sadism and Violence in the Cinema.

Yeah, he’s an ancient Roman slave who materializes in 50s Greenwich Village and discovers the joys of hard drugs. Traveling back in time to his original era, he introduces smack to his masters and brings about the fall of Rome. But Busby Berkeley sticks to his dry martinis.
