A Startling Image

From GENUINE, directed by Robert Wiene. It’s nice! Haven’t watched the film yet, but couldn’t wait to share this.

I’ve only ever seen the condensed version that’s included as an extra on Kino’s Cabinet of Dr. Caligari disc. Based on that, all I can say is that Genuine is utterly insane. I’d like to see the full version sometime, if only to ascertain whether it’s more or less mad than the condensed one.

Oh, now you’ve got me — have no idea if my copy is condensed or full-length. It’s pretty short though.
Production designer Herman Warrm always argued that Wiene was a great director and it was a mistake to think of him as a one-hit wonder. Certainly Hands of Orlak is a stonker.

Orlac, maybe more than Caligari, is convincing evidence that Wiene was robbed of proper credit for his obvious insanity.

I’ll report back on Genuine as soon as I’ve wallowed in it properly. I’d love to see his Raskolnikov — why isn’t that one available?

My God, that WOULD be startling!

There is a dvd of Raskolnikov available under the title Crime and Punishment from public domain merchants Alpha. Like a lot of Alpha product, it’s not a very good print, nor is it full-length, but it can be had cheap, if you’re so inclined:
