    One potentially useful tip…

Whetever you do, don’t be the late German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. One year, Joan was President of the Jury at the Berlin Film Festival and RFW was awarded the Golden Bear. Allegedly, he showed up to collect it wearing S&M leather bondage gear.

So shocked and horrified was poor Joan that she stood up on the stage and started screaming that the award was mistake. The organisers of the Festival – who had found her somewhat hard to deal with (to put it politely) – relished the incident and insisted that she pose for photos with Fassbinder, a rigor mortis smile pasted onto her face.

Oh, and one more tip…don’t under any circumstances be her sister Olivia de Havilland. The two ladies are now in their tenth decade, but their feud looks set to outlive them both.

  2. “What kind of pervert are we giving this prize to?”

To which the correct answer would surely be, “Every kind!”

Apparently she also refused to speak to the Russian jurist, because he was a commie, and she didn’t see any of the films.

Joan and Olivia are still with us. They live in Paris. Wonder if anyone can axe an interview with them before…

I love Joan Fontaine and find this still delicious.

    That Fassbinder…such a charmer!

  4. I think an interview with one or the other might be possible, but perhaps not both.

Olivia has just written her autobiography – ominously titled, NOW IS THE TIME – which is due out in May. I’m hoping it will be more enlightening and enjoyable than the one Joan wrote back in the 70s. It title was NO BED OF ROSES – but her second husband, BATMAN producer William Dozier, always referred to it as NO SHRED OF TRUTH.

I’ll always be tempted to believe Olivia above Joan, largely because I prefer Olivia’s work as an actress. However, it’s been my experience that siblings fall out NOT because they are so different (as they invariably say) but because they are too similar. Still, I’m longing to read Olivia’s side of the story.
