A Day Late and a Dollar Short

Not much point in me writing a Forgotten if I neglect to tell my editor I’ve done so, is there? Belatedly, then, this week’s Forgotten appears.

An unusually precipitous June has left Edinburgh International Film Festival sopping wet this year — I escape the downpour by plunging into Yves Allegret’s grimly wistful UNE SI JOLIE PETITE PLAGE, the wettest film on record. Pull on your galoshes and splash over to the Daily Notebook for this forgotten treasure.

  1. David Boxwell Says:

I would love to see this, since I love the other Allegret-Philipe collaboration, LES ORGUILLEUX (53), which has scads of doomy romanticism.

  2. Yes, I’ve been meaning to watch that one for simply ages. And as his perf as Modigliani shows, Philipe plays drunk terribly well.

  3. Loved Peter Falk. That’s the worst kind of “off topic.” This page has clips from several of his best roles; I just watched him in “Murder, Inc.” followed by “The In-Laws” — hell of a contrast.

His best performance was in “Mikey and Nicky,” IMHO.

  4. Love that one too. His first film was Nick Ray’s Wind Across the Everglades whose star Christopher Plummer is at 87 not only still working but at the very top of his game in Mike Mills’ Beginners

  5. BTW in that Mikey and Nicky clip, Izzy who lost all his hair is Mike Nichols.

  6. Poor Falk had altzheimers for a while, I think. I heard that Wim Wenders wanted to visit but was told not to bother because Falk wouldn’t recognise him. Very sad. Mikey and Nicky probably is his best, but he had a substantial body of work.

Would love to see Wind Across the Everglades get a release on DVD. Falk’s role is tiny, but it’s a significant movie in the Nick Ray oeuvre and as an early eco-tale.
