In that marvellous documentary Glorious Technicolor, now on DVD, Esther Williams I think has a little moan about Lana. Mainly she’s moaning about holding “the lily”, a sort of clour chart used by cameramen to get the image callibrated correctly for Technicolor. “I would be there for hours with that thing. I used to wonder what Lana Turner was up to while I was holding the lily. She wasn’t holding any lily, believe me…”

That’s what’s so great about Lana. You never know where acting ends and “real life” begins. On a personal level she was quite popular at MGM. Judy Garland was a friend for life, and as I belive I mentioned here in another context Mr. Cukor found her a “great camp” and quite enjoyed working with her on A Life of Her Own.

Anita is a SURVIVOR. The BBC did a great documentary about her some years ago, where she held court, pronouncing on Playboy’s list of sexiest women, and trashing her rivals. “Zsa Zsa Gabor had som much plastic surgery… every time her nose got smaller… now it is like a Pekingese… like a power socket… hah hah!”

Lex Barker always creeps me out onscreen after what Cheryl Crane has revealed. She really suffered for her mom’s lousy taste in men.

Have you ever seen footage of Lana testifying in court at Cheryl’s trial for stabbing Johnny Stompanato? Pure Imitation of Life! One longs for Cheryl to yell out, “Stop ACTING, mother!” But it clearly wowed the jury, all that star wattage.
