Best line in the film. One cries for help and drowns, one carries on swimming until the milk turns to butter — surviving, but alone. Losey’s take on it is characteristically grim. “And it’s one thing I’ve never been able to quite observe myself because vulnerability being too much or too little is impossible to measure. Very frequently it’s too much and you are destroyed. It’s too little and then the work isn’t as good as it should be.”
