The Witch’s Ride
From THE VIY, based on a short story by Gogol. This has to be the most beautiful witch-flight on filmĀ outside of KIKI’S DELIVERY SERVICE. Unlike me, the movie is beautiful andĀ AVAILABLE.

The same short story was used for one of the episodes of Mario Bava’s I Tre Volti Della Paura .
As for flying my fave is Sabu’s Genie Airways in The Thief of Baghdad.

i had to check because that didn’t seem right — Mask of Satan is based on The Viy, whereas the Karloff episode of I Tre Volti is based on Aleksei Tolstoi’s Sem’ya Vurdulaka. Both rather loosely, I suspect.
Yes, if we include other magical flights, Sabu jumps to somewhere near the top, and the animated short The Snowman is a runner-up. But I’d put Murnau’s Faust at the very pinnacle. http://dcairns.wordpress.com/2008/01/07/the-prophecy/

You’re right. Faust is Murnau’s masterpeice, IMO. And Bill Krohn and I do the commentary track on the “Masters of Cinema” DVD.
