He’s very very funny about Flash Gordon, and Dino De Laurentiis.

Fiona was on a film course with Hodges as a mentor, so I know him slightly. When I expressed the desire to see his early TV work, he mailed me two tapes, asking that I return them when I was done, as they were his only copies!

But is work is very subtle. Flash Gordon is an amazingly sophisticated film, as is Croupier. The latter made Clive Owen a star — for which we’re all grateful. But it’s a shame I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead barely registered with either critics or moviegoers. There is literally nothing in the history of the cinema comparable to the scene in which Malcolm McDowell rapes Jonathan Rhys-Myers. It’s all about power and humiliation — not sexual satisfaction at all. And Hodges makes this clear in a way that’s uncanny.
