Tony Holland was one of the most amazing people I've ever known. Thin, Jewish, wildly literary and the opposite of macho he would appear to be a type and nothing more. Yet within that he found all sorts of ways to work on stage and screen. As a member of the original Chicago Second City he was schooled in intellectual humor of the most rarefied sort. Joan Rivers has always credited him with spurring her to go on stage and actually perform all the brilliant material she had been writing for other people. For awhile at Second City they worked as a team.

Among his most memorable performances: Bye Bye Braverman (Sidney Lumet's marvelous film of Wallace Markfield's To An Early Grave), Paul Mazursky's Tempest and All That Jazz (see slip above.)

Here's a very personal piece I write about Tony, which as you'll see is also about the great Barbara Harris and the doomed Lenny Baker.
